Fight Club Creator Reveals His Biggest Problem With Iconic Brad Pitt Movie: “Obviously Such A Trope”

Fight Club creator Chuck Palahniuk reveals his biggest problem with the beloved Brad Pitt movie to be its ending and how it falls into genre tropes.


Though largely staying true to its source material, one major change to Fight Club has bothered creator Chuck Palahniuk. Based on the 1996 novel of the same name, the darkly comedic thriller centered on an unnamed white-collar worker who begins to embrace a more anarchic lifestyle after meeting the rebellious Tyler Durden and forming the eponymous club of men that begins to spiral into something more dangerous. Led by Edward Norton and Brad Pitt and helmed by David Fincher, the movie polarized critics at the time, but has gone on to become a cult classic.

While speaking with Variety to promote his new novel Not Forever, But For Now, Palahniuk reflected on the legacy of Fight Club. When asked if there were any parts of the Brad Pitt-led movie that has bothered him in the years since it came out, the author pointed towards the movie's ending, feeling the "ticking bomb" countdown involved in The Narrator and Tyler's final confrontation didn't fit his vision for the story. See what Palahniuk explained below:

I wasn’t a big fan of the ticking bomb, that counting down clock near the end. And [screenwriter] Jim Uhls stuck it in because there’s obviously such a trope, and I’ve grown to accept that it is a trope.


How Fight Club's Ending Differs From The Novel


The Fight Club ending sees The Narrator finally come to the realization that Tyler is actually a split personality within himself and learns that the latter has planned with Project Mayhem to erase the debts of many by blowing up buildings housing credit records. Having failed to disarm one of the explosives, The Narrator and Tyler have a heated confrontation in a nearby skyscraper overlooking the buildings set to be destroyed with their partner Marla in attendance. The Narrator ultimately turns his gun on himself, nonfatally shooting himself through the mouth to kill the Tyler personality, though left watching the explosions occur in the distance.

Up to this point, Fight Club had remained largely faithful to Palahniuk's novel, namely both the Tyler reveal and that the alternate had blown up The Narrator's condo that kickstarted his close relationship with him. The book did similarly feature Tyler having a plan to blow up a skyscraper, though rather than housing credit records and seeking to erase debts, the alternate had a much more selfish plan in the source material, keen to become a martyr by dying in the explosion along with The Narrator.

The other major change to Fight Club's ending from the novel is that Tyler's plan doesn't succeed, as the alternate personality vanishes before The Narrator can shoot and kill him and the explosives malfunction. The Narrator does still shoot himself, though survives and is put in a mental hospital, where members of Project Mayhem are working and confirm the group's plans continue and their expectation for Tyler to return. Given Palahniuk wouldn't pen a follow-up for nearly 20 years, it's understandable Fincher and writer Jim Uhls may have sought to deliver a more definitive ending to the story that captured the same anti-capitalist themes the rest of the movie explored.
